Ann
Abess is a Registered Nurse and a Certified Nurse Midwife. She
attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Syracuse, NY. She served
as President of the Student Government of St. Joseph's School of Nursing.
She has worked in numerous hospitals and held various Charge/Head Nurse
positions. She furthered her professional education by becoming a
Certified Nurse Midwife at the Medical University of South Carolina where
she worked until coming to this office. She has been also been quite
active in La Leche League. Ann has extensive experience managing doctor
offices. She currently runs the office for Dr. Abess and combines
her nursing and administrative expertise to run an efficient and happy office.
Dr.
Abess completed his undergraduate training at LeMoyne College with
degree of B.S in Multiple Science. Military service includes 4 ½
years in the U.S. Army with an honorable discharge at the rank of Captain.
His Medical Degree was obtained at The Medical University of South Carolina.
Rotating Medical Internship and Psychiatric Residency occurred at The
Medical University of South Carolina where Dr. Abess was elected Chief
Resident. Before entering full time private practice, Dr. Abess
worked for the Hospital Consultation and Liaison Service of the Medical
University of South Carolina. Since January, 1978, Dr. Abess has
worked in the Charleston Community in the Private Practice of Psychiatry.
His practice has involved both outpatient and inpatient psychiatry.
He was instrumental in developing inpatient psychiatric treatment programs
at a number of hospital facilities. He is currently Chief of Division
of Psychiatry for St. Francis Hospital. Dr. Abess has special expertise
in clinical psychopharmacology (use of medications), individual psychotherapy
(talk therapy), medical hypnosis (habit control, pain control, etc.),
and the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders (depression, bipolar disorder,
panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobic disorder, generalized
anxiety disorder). Dr.
Abess is board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology, and Psychopharmacology.
Black
Angel Gabriel "Gabe" is the office mascot and official greeter.
He entertains children, both small and grown, and testifies to the effectiveness
of the office's anti-stress program. Gabe also likes "treats".
